The 2026 On-Page SEO Checklist

Why on-page SEO still matters
On-page SEO is the fastest way to move a page up in search results because you control every lever. Unlike link building, you don't need to convince anyone else to change anything.
The checklist
1. Title tag
Keep titles under 60 characters. Put your main keyword near the front, but write for humans first — a compelling title improves click-through rate, which correlates with rankings.
2. Meta description
150–160 characters. Not a ranking signal directly, but a great description means more clicks.
3. Headings
One H1 per page. Use H2 and H3 to structure content — search engines and screen readers both rely on them.
4. Internal links
Every page should link out to at least two other relevant pages. Use descriptive anchor text ("free meta tag generator", not "click here").
5. Structured data
Add JSON-LD for Article, Product, FAQ, BreadcrumbList — whichever fits. It powers rich results.
6. Core Web Vitals
Aim for LCP < 2.5s, INP < 200ms, CLS < 0.1. See our Core Web Vitals guide.
7. Images
Compress them, use WebP or AVIF, always include alt text, and lazy-load below-the-fold images.
